How Fast Can You Type in Chinese?

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Natalie Lantos, who was a student at the CompuCollege School of Business back in 1998, set the World Record in typing - 192 English words per minute.
So, how fast can human beings type in Chinese, the language with approximately 47,035 different characters? Here’s the answer: 502 Chinese characters per minute, or even more:
Notice: The girl named Huang Xia was not typing with a regular computer keyboard, but a mini input device called “Yawei Steno Kit” which can be seen at almost every press conference in mainland China. (It looks a lot like a western court stenography machine). On this page, you can see that there are only 14 keys on the stuff.
Phew… I think I could spend the rest of my life trying and still never figure out how it works!

Mark Kislingbury, a court reporter from Houston, Texas, wrote 360 words per minute for one minute with 97.22% accuracy at the 2004 convention of the National Court Reporters Association in Chicago.
Court reporters in the U.S. have entry certifications at 225 words per minute. The average English word length is 5.1 characters (http://blogamundo.net/lab/wordlengths/), which works out to 1,147.5 characters per minute. This is not intended as a better-worse comparison. Shorthand writers and typists from several countries compete in several contests at the biennial Intersteno Congress. the next one of which will be next year, coincidentally in Beijing. This is pretty amazing. The Baidu Baike article reads like it was copied from Yawei press materials, but it seems like this thing works sort of like 双拼 input on computers. It must have pretty impressive sentence-guessing capabilities, if it’s going to generate usable output with minimal editing at speeds like that.
