Professional Housewives: Chinese College Girls’ Dream Job

Posted on Dec 29, 2008 by Steven Lin | Filed under: Video News, Wild Wild China

In the gloomy days of this economic downturn, Chinese college girls are going to matrimonial agencies instead of overheated job fairs.

Ms. Yang, who works for a matrimonial agency in Shandong province, says in this video, “Whether you have a bachelors or a masters degree, it’s pretty difficult to find a decent job. People tend to try some shortcuts — like being professional housewives.”

“It’s also kind of contribution to the society.” A college girl responded in the video.

But a cynical Youku user who disagrees with this notion of becoming a “professional housewives” did some interesting calculations in the comments:

The other day, I met a girl who kept prattling on about her dream of marrying a millionaire. She just wouldn’t shut up. My friend couldn’t stand it any more, and asked the girl, “You wanna marry a man with property worth one million RMB, right? How old are you now?” The girl answered, “20. So?” My friend went on, “Let’s assume you will die at 80, and you’ll enter menopause at about 50. From 20 to 50, you still have 30 quality years. With 365 days per year, there are 1,0950 days. After taking out some days for periods and such, in the 9,000 remaining days, your millionaire husband would like to do it with you every single day. 1,000,000 divided by 9,000 is 111 RMB per day. See? You’re even cheaper then a hooker!” The girl cried out immediately.

Hmm… What a mathematical genius! A cynic, to be sure…

BTW, I think you might enable a “digg system” for promoting the positive or funny comments. It’s really hard for me to pick up the original Chinese comment of this joke.
