Chinese People Line Up for “Chunyun”

In Chinese, “chunyun” (春运, Spring Festival travel season) means the peak transportation load that happens around the Lunar New Year. This year’s “chunyun” period began today and will last for 40 days. An estimated total of 188 million people will travel by rail during this season.
In this video uploaded yesterday by a Youku user, you can see the long queue outside the railway station in Hefei, Anhui. Most passengers in this first wave of “chunyun” were college students who had waited hours at the temporary ticket windows.
They’re lucky enough though. As CCTV News reported, lots of people waited 24 hours, reached the ticket window the first moment it started working, but still got nothing. “The tickets have been sold out.” It’s all the information they can get.
This morning, I joined the crowd waiting outside a ticket agency in the Wudaokou area of northwestern Beijing. When entering the small room, I heard an aged woman asking, “How can this happen? Where have all the tickets gone? It’s impossible for me to stand in the train for 36 hours!” In a year of economic downturn, railway tickets seem more scarce than ever before.
