Smoking Babes in Sichuan

Posted on Feb 12, 2009 by Kaiser Kuo | Filed under: Humor, Wild Wild China

Okay, that title got your attention. If you aren’t deeply disturbed by the video, uploaded about a week ago, there’s something wrong with you. As if it weren’t enough that this two-year-old kid from Sichuan is frighteningly adept with a lighter! Equally shocking is the fact that his father seems inordinately proud, and that everyone watching is encouraging the kid. Admittedly I’ve let my two-year-old dip a kuaizi in a glass of my single malt Scotch from time to time, and he’s allowed a sip of beer once in a while. And I suppose that raising kids in Beijing, what with the air quality and all, is as bad from a health perspective as letting them smoke cigarettes.

Just watching this in a coffee shop, and 8-10 people gathered to watch over my shoulder, all saying “so cute, this little kid, and so smart.”

What the hell? Did I miss some part of this that is not completely disturbing?

Hrmm.. I’m not sure which is more disturbing.. the video (and pride of father etc) or the above comment by Sage that suggests it is not seen as anything wrong by average Chinese people…

OHHHH, MYYYYY, GOOOOOOD……….I’m TOTALLY speechless…….what the hell is wrong with the Chinese people???????????

Keep in mind that this is just one person out of 1.3 billion who is letting his little boy smoke. This is not a common sight in China. The real question is: what brand is he smoking? If it’s Camels, I see a law suit on the horizon….
