Real-life Need for Speed!

In the spring of 2006, rumors popped up all over the Web of some desperate speeders on the 2nd Ring Road here in Beijing. As the Guangzhou Daily reported, the fastest record holder called “Sir 13 of the Second Ring” (二环十三郎) finished the 32.7 km long ring road in just 13 minutes, topping out at 150 km/h. (The speed limit is 80 km/h.)
Urban street racing, insanely dangerous as it is, continues in China’s cities. Recently, a video of a Porsche 911 Turbo chasing a Mercedes-Benz SLR on Shanghai’s highways announced that a new Chinese urban racing record had been set. According to the Shanghai Morning Post, a taxi driver estimated that the Porsche finished a 10 km stretch of the Yan’an elevated highway in Shanghai in 3.5 minutes, with an average speed of 170 km/h. If you can’t imagine how fast it is, watch the video:

LoL, given my love for cars, that certainly brought a quiver to my loins. Unfortunately, I’m not some high official’s spoiled son and can’t afford such exotic playthings. Oh, and I ride the metro here in Shanghai. I’ve seen that black Turbo around before. Oh how part of me envies them so. But ahem, yeah, keep the racing off the streets, son! Someone should go post this over at thecarlounge.com/vwvortex.com. It’ll get a massive amount of traffic.
