Unicom’s WCDMA Network, iPhone Friendly

More video about China’s 3G wireless networks for you. This one is a rather silly cartoon created in an official capacity by China Unicom to promote WCDMA, the standard that it’s been licensed for, and which most carriers offering 3G service are using. Apparently Unicom is banking on major market share in that heavy data using, 9-and-under telecom segment. Unicom’s marketing savvy is legendary: They’re the geniuses who branded their CDMA service in China under the brilliant name “CDMA.”
Of note to all of you who are interested in when a Chinese carrier will finally support the iPhone officially, this is pretty much your answer, yeah?
Apparently it will support HSPA (which means both HSDPA for blazing-fast downloads, and HSUPA for relatively blazing uplink as well). Downlink is claimed at a max of 14.4 Mbps, and uplink at 5.7 Mbps. Actual results may vary.
