Afterquake: Sichuan Quake Relief Music with Abigail Washburn & The Shanghai Restoration Project

As most of you know, a year ago today, a massive earthquake rocked central Sichuan Province, killing over 80,000 people and displacing some 15 million people from their homes.
In March, my friend the American filmmaker Luke Mines of “Sexy Beijing” fame went to Sichuan to shoot a video for a project called Afterquake, which combines the songs and voices of earthquake survivors with the music of two American musicians who’ve spent a long time working in China: the amazing banjo played Abigail Washburn (of the Sparrow Quartet) and Dave Liang of the Shanghai Restoration Project.
“After a lot of editing, the video is officially up today,” writes Luke. “It has lots of footage from the disaster zone as well the stories of parents and children separated by the earthquake. You will see that the recovery still has a long way to go.”
Please also check out the official website of the Afterquake project, with beautiful still pictures and samples of the musical tracks:
Hear an NPR All Things Considered story on the project with Melissa Block here.
You can also support quake relief by getting the tracks on iTunes or picking up the CD on Amazon.

It is possible to fail in many ways…while to succeed is possible only in one way.
