Yesterday’s total solar eclipse — the longest of the century blah blah — might have been a big disappointment for those who traveled halfway ’round the world to Shanghai to see it, but the lousy weather that ruined things for Shanghai wasn’t to be found everywhere in the eclipse’s path through China. By 2:30 pm on July 22, Youku users had uploaded over 3870 individual videos of the eclipse. That’s nine times the number on China’s leading portal, and 15 times the number on a certain other Internet video site with a tuber-derived name. Not to be immodest or anything, but it can fairly be said that we eclipsed the competition. Uploads came in at an average of 3 per minute, and came from just about every city where the eclipse was visible. Videos were uploaded from Tibet, from Hong Kong, from Macao, and hundreds of other locations.
